Ben Foos, Graphic Designer, San Diego Air & Space Museum.

1. Can you describe a typical day or work week?
Everyday is different. Work hard to meet deadlines. ASAP means ASAP! We work on 3 or 4 projects going at once.

2. How did you become interested in this type of work and how did you get your present job at the Museum?
I was always drawing and painting when I was younger. Then my Dad tells me Graphic Design to make money from my work. I started in Maintenance, then promoted to Head of Maintenance and talked to Head of Graphic and started to networking. Had 6-8 years experience in print.

3. What advice would you give someone who’s interested in starting out this your field?
Work at print shops also like Kinko’s. You have to have had work at places for that work experience. Don’t be to full of your self.

4. What skills are important to be successful in your position?
Knowledge of Adobe programs. Come up with good concept ideas. Lot of Research.

5. What part of your job is the most satisfying?
When the ideas transforms into print.

6. What part of your job is the most challenging?
Concepts. It is hard trying to be original.

7. How does your organization differ from it’s competitors?
We have printing in-house instead of out source. We are not really competing around here.

8. What professional organizations and journals are related to your field?
Member of AIGI and NAPP. Meeting are to help you meet people and networking in you field. Some will not hire you if you are not a member of something.

The three main points I learned from conducting this assignment is:
1. Meeting deadlines with lot’s of projects on your plate.
2. Getting some experience at small print shops or any intern jobs available.
3. Always researching to improve yourself and to start networking in professional organizations.

Something that I can improve while conducting future interviews is have a recorder instead of writing really fast and sloppy, not getting everything the person is saying.

Price is the amount of money charged for a product or service. The psychological pricing is an approach that says something about the product and has nothing to do with economics. Consumers perceive higher-priced products as having higher quality. Clothing found in more expensive department is assumed to be better quality. Like Macy’s and Ross. Macy’s gives Ross the same clothes to be sold for cheaper price. But some prefer being seen at Macy’s.

Another way is Reference Prices. Reference price notes the older prices or current prices. Example a price looking like $299.99 looks a lot better than $300. The $299.99 looks more like a bargain.

The deal is you agree to pay Google (GOOG) 1 cent and upwards each time your words are clicked. The highest bidder per word wins a spot on the top ten of search page. I have been getting this ad from google in the mail lately. Not e-mail, but the mail person walking up to the door with dogs barking kind of mail.

Google is on the drive. Google has just bought YouTube for $1.65 Billion and Double Click for $3.1 Billion. Google is expanding display ads on websites across the web world.

Advertisers are finding out display ads are cheaper than TV ads. Yahoo (YHOO) is choosing to offer display ads on search pages.

There is product mix everywhere. Sony, Coca-cola, Marriott, and Swiss Army just to name a few have plenty of product mix. Product Mix consists of all the product lines and items that sellers offer for sale. Sony for example includes camera’s, camcorders, computers, TV, home entertainment, and mobile electronics.

A company has four different product mix dimensions:
▪    Width { the number of different product lines the company carries }
▪    Length { total number of items the company carries with in it’s product lines }
▪    Depth { versions offered of each product in the line }
▪    Consistency { closely related various product lines are in end use, production requirements, distribution channels, or some other way }

A company can increase it’s business in four ways and add new product lines widening its product mix.

Forget ketchup, I am loyal to Prego spaghetti sauce. We all are loyal to one or more brands. Can be the clothes you wear, the liquor you drink, mouthwash you swoosh around your mouth, or the gas you put in the car. Buyers are divided in groups to a degree of loyalty. You have the customers that buy that one brand only, like my Prego.

Other consumers are kind of loyal, buying two or three brands than just sticking to one brand. Example Cereal. Kellogg’s Raisin Bran, some Post Fruity Pebbles, and General Mills Cheerios.

Then you have the consumers with no loyalty bone in their body, like Tiger Woods. They want something different each time or whatever is on sale.

Companies can learn from studying their loyal costumers by learning what the company can do better. Companies also study the less-loyal consumers. Pin pointing the brands that are competitive with it’s own. A company can learn about it’s weakness this way.

Consumer’s are influenced by social factors, like small groups, family, and social role and status. In Downtown Roles and Status is everywhere looking at you up and down and ending with a slow snobby look away. A role is activities people are expected to perform according to people around them. Each role equals a status reflecting esteem by society.

People choose products that shows off their role and status. Like Ruth Chris for steak lovers, a Mercedes for strippers, Envy at the Ivy for Pimp Daddy, and Jack Daniel’s for the cool drunk guy.
